3 steps

There are three steps associated with the integration of the Smart Levees concept. This is a cyclical approach involving a preliminary planning phase, an implementation phase and an evaluation, and a follow-up phase. Together, these three steps establish the life cycle of an asset and an understanding of the information requirements.

Preliminary planning phase

Which safety requirements apply and what information is needed in which phase to make this clear? Are there other factors or developments requiring additional boundary conditions for the levee?

Implementation phase

The drafting of an information strategy is an important step. It results in a monitoring plan with the details of the selected monitoring strategies: which information is needed in which management phase to make decisions about intervention, investments and the required action? The Smart Levee is now being constructed often in combination with market research and tenders.

Follow-up phase

The management plan maintains the flow of information about the condition of the levee and provides guidelines for sustainable management and for anticipating developments or factors that may affect the requirements in the long term.
